5. Live action Little Mermaid writing credits

Old books stacked up

Hans Christian Andersen is the writer of the original Little Mermaid novel that inspired the Disney movie. The book was published on April 7, 1837. However, the novel has a much darker ending than the Disney adaptation.  Anderson’s The Little Mermaid is the Danish fairy tale about a mermaid who becomes human and leaves the sea to seek out true love, so that she may gain a human soul. But she fails to do so in the book and is left with the fate of turning to seafoam. The new Little Mermaid movie will be more based upon Disney’s happier version.

The screen play for the upcoming film was written by Jane Goldman and David Magee.

Halle Bailey as Ariel

Halle Bailey in turquoise top and skirt

Halle Bailey, age 21, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who performs alongside her sister in the R&B duo Chloe x Halle. The sisters won five Grammy nominations.

Disney had to defend casting Bailey as Ariel because there was a racist backlash. Some felt Disney was not staying true to the original depiction of Ariel, but the actress and singer was carefully chosen based on her merit and personality.

“[Bailey] possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,”  said director Rob Marshall.

Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric

Jonah Hauer-King is a 26-year British actor who has starred in movies such as The Last Photograph and A Dog's Way Home. He also performed in the shows Howards End and Little Women.

With thick, dark hair, dreamy eyes, and even dreamier dimples, Jonah is an excellent choice for the Disney prince.

Not only is he a talented actor, but he can also sing! It is not yet known if he will have any songs in the movie, but we are crossing our fingers!

Alan Menken, who worked on songs for the original film, will be joined alongside producer Lin-Manuel Miranda for the music of this film. It will include songs from the original movie, as well as some new songs!

Halle Bailey will not only play Ariel but will also do the singing for the part. Halle is perfect for this part because she is a professional singer, performing with her sister in an R&B group Chloe x Halle.

Melissa McCarthy will be singing Poor Unfortunate Souls. We think she will be amazing for this part, as has the perfect dramatic flair and comedic style to perform the infamous villain’s song.
